Ulliyeri: Soha, a four-month-old baby girl, suffering from severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is currently undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. The girl, the only daughter of Sabith and Suhana, was born without immunity.
She developed an infection in her blood 10 days after birth and had to be put on a ventilator. She underwent treatment at a private hospital for three months and contracted pneumonia around this time. She was shifted to the Institute of Maternal and Child Health at Kozhikode Medical College.
The tests conducted in the following days confirmed that she is suffering from SCID. The doctors have instructed that bone marrow replacement is the solution at hand. Though parents are ready to be the donor, they cannot affford the surgery cost. The bone marrow transplant costs around Rs 50 lakh. Grama panchayat member CK Soman has started a medical aid fund.
