Authorities urge all EV users to follow these guidelines strictly, as preventive caution is the best defence against accidents in this growing era of electric mobility.

The Motor Vehicles Department has issued a cautionary advisory urging drivers to maintain high safety standards while using electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) also stressed that drivers should remain as vigilant at charging points as they are on public roads.
Where should you be careful while driving into a charging station?
- Limited space: Most charging stations are set up in areas as small as five cents. Parking must be done with care, keeping an eye out for other vehicles and pedestrians.
- Reduce speed: Slow down well before entering the station premises.
- Stop at the designated point: Vehicles must be brought to a halt just before the ground stopper installed on the floor. A recent accident at a station in Vagamon occurred because this precaution wasn’t followed.
- Avoid racing the vehicle: Refrain from pressing the accelerator abruptly near the station.
Is it safe to wait near charging area?
- Sit only in safe zones: Any seating arrangements should be away from the actual charging points.
- Stay clear of charging equipment: Users must never stand or sit near live charging points to avoid electric shocks.
- Don’t leave the gun carelessly: Some users leave the charging gun lying around after use, which poses a safety risk and should be avoided.
Why are EV mishaps increasing at charging stations?
- Automatic transmission unfamiliarity: Most EVs have automatic systems. Lack of experience with such vehicles often leads to accidents.
- Ensure experienced handling: Let someone familiar with the vehicle operate it when entering or exiting charging areas.
- Accelerate gently: Apply pressure on the accelerator smoothly to prevent jerky or unsafe movement.
- Check for people around you: Always verify that no one is standing in front of or behind the vehicle before moving it.
How should you park at a charging station?
- Follow marked guidelines: Charging stations usually have yellow lines to indicate where to park.
- Park only within the marked zone: Make sure the vehicle is fully within the designated area to ensure safety for all users.
Authorities urge all EV users to follow these guidelines strictly, as preventive caution is the best defence against accidents in this growing era of electric mobility.
