External forces behind violence in Vizhinjam, says Fr Eugine Pereira

Thiruvananthapuram: Anti-port protest committee chairman Fr Eugine Pereira alleged that some external forces are behind the attack against Vizhinjam police station. Addressing the media here on Monday, he stated that Adani agents are involved in the violence.

“ Some people in the nearest building pelted stones during the protest. CCTV visuals should be examined to confirm this. The government has scripted the issues for crushing the protest against the port,” alleged Fr Eugine Pereira.

“ Police booked many people including myself over the protest on November 26. Neither the archbishop nor the auxiliary bishop visited the protest venue. I’m not worried about the case against me. Shelton who was arrested by the police is not involved in these protests. But the police forcefully took him and booked him in the case. The police didn’t pay heed to our requests to release him,” added Fr Eugene.

Police also detained the people who reached the police station to enquire about Shelton’s arrest. At first, a group of women reached the police station and observed the protest peacefully.

“ I won’t justify the violence. It was really unfortunate. I would like to express my grief over the injured police officials. I hope such incidents wouldn't repeat,” pointed out Fr Eugene.

Talking about the all-party meeting, the priest said that he will cooperate to restore peace in Vizhinjam.
