Kochi (Kerala): Tensions erupted at Malayidamturuthu in Kizhakkambalam of Ernakulam district during an eviction attempt. Following the deployment of water cannons and intense protests by demonstrators, the police eventually withdrew. The police retreat came after the intervention of Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala. The authorities were attempting to execute the eviction based on a Supreme Court order regarding a dispute that has persisted for half a century. This marks the 15th eviction attempt at the site.

The police fired water cannons at the protest venue after an individual attempted suicide by pouring petrol over their head. Efforts were also made to arrest and remove the protestors. On the previous 14 occasions, the police had maintained restraint while attempting the eviction. Political leaders, including the CPM area secretary, have come forward in support of the protestors.

A dispute over the ownership of this land has been ongoing in the area for nearly 50 years. To implement the court order, an advocate commissioner, along with revenue and court officials and the police, had attempted eviction procedures here several times.

While one party claims that this land belongs to a private individual, the local residents maintain a firm stance that they will not move from the land they have inhabited for years. Although the advocate commission arrived at the spot to initiate proceedings, the locals gathered in large numbers and strongly blocked the attempt.
