Thiruvananthapuram: In a move to instill reading habits among youngsters, the Education Department has decided to incorporate reading as part of the school curriculum.

After evaluating students' reading habits, which include library books and newspapers, schools would issue internal marks as part of continuous evaluation.

Inaugurating the National Reading Day celebrations in the state capital, Education Minister V Sivankutty said children should develop reading habits alongside academics. Reading will be made part of the school curriculum, he added.

An examiner would evaluate students' reading habits on various subjects, including literature, science, history, and general reading. As per the latest reports, students from 8th standard onwards would receive the marks. Minister added that SCERT would prepare a framework for the same.
