Kochi: A female wild elephant died after falling into an abandoned well in Kodanad near Perumbavoor on Saturday morning.
The incident happened around 3 am. Currently, efforts are being taken to lift the carcass from the well.
Following the start of summer, wild elephants started to pay frequent visits to the Kodanad region. However, it is not normal for elephant herds to roam near human settlements at daybreak. However, the locals claimed that elephants refuse to leave the area due to the soaring temperature. It is believed that the female elephant might have lost its way and fallen into the well.
Meanwhile, the natives staged a protest demanding immediate action to stop wild animals from entering human settlements. The locals pointed out lack of boundaries to separate the forest from the human settlements has left their lives in danger.
