Thiruvananthapuram: Those who have LMV (Light Motor Vehicle) license can also drive autorickshaws from now on as the special license for autorickshaws was stopped when the state switched to the nation-wide license software 'Sarathi'. There is no category for autorickshaw in 'Sarathi' software. Instead, LMV license is suggested for all taxis.

The new amendment is not applicable for those who already have autorickshaw license. They will be given e-rickshaw (electric-rickshaw) license while renewing their current license. LPG, petrol, diesel and electric autorickshaws can be driven using this e-rickshaw license. An order will be issued validating this, the Transport Commissionerate informed.

Though the state requested to continue with the special license for autorickshaws, the Ministry of Road Transport did not agree with it. The condition that those who drive small taxis need no badge also was implemented along with this.

The central government decided not to issue special license for autorickshaws after quadricycles were introduced. It allows four people including driver to travel. Quadricycle is similar to the size of autorickshaws, but has the control system of a car.

Meanwhile, the driving school trainers said those who have LMV license cannot drive autorickshaws without training. The control systems of both vehicles are different and the autorickshaws are more dangerous, they said. Though this was pointed out earlier, the state had to agree with the Centre's condition, the Motor Vehicle Department officials said.
