Kochi: Dr VP Mahadevan Pillai, former Vice Chancellor of Kerala University, passed away on Sunday morning. As per reports, he had long been undergoing treatment at Amrita hospital in Ernakulam.

Former governor Arif Muhammad Khan had earlier sent show-cause notices to nine VCs of several institutes, including Dr Pillai, in the VC appointment row. The Kerala High Court had cancelled the governor’s decision to dismiss 15 members of Kerala University, in March 2023. It was through the court intervention that Dr Pillai was able to complete his tenure.

Hailing from Pathanamthitta, Dr Pillai began his career in St Gregorios College, Kottarakkara before his appointment as the VC of the University of Kerala in 2018.

The body will be placed for public homage at Kerala University on Monday. The funeral rites will be carried out at Shanthi Kavadam, Thiruvananthapuram, on Tuesday.
