Thiruvananthapuram: Doorstep garbage collection program has brought about considerable changes in the waste management processes at homes and institutions in Kerala. Only forest areas and colonies, where ‘Haritha Karma Sena’ finds it difficult to reach out, are facing waste management issues at the moment.

In Kozhikode district, the garbage collection by Haritha Karma Sena have effectively reached a range of approximately 68-94%.

In order to make the state garbage free, the local self government department had decided to establish Haritha Karma Sena units in all the municipal corporations and gram panchayats across the state. At present, 33,797 individuals are part of the Haritha Karma Sena across 19,489 wards.

  • Doorstep Garbage Collection Extends to 50-75% in Six Corporations
  • 75-90 percent are covered in two corporations.
  • Over 90 percent collected in a single corporation.

When it comes to gram panchayats:

  • In 941 gram panchayats, collection extends to 50-75 pc.
  • 75-90 percent collections were done in 265 panchayats.
  • Meanwhile, over 90 percent collection recorded in 393 gram panchayats.

User fee is also collected from the citizens.

It should be noted that the authorities had instructed to dispose of biodegradable waste within the individual compounds and had asked the citizens to hand over non-biodegradable waste to the Haritha Karma Sena after paying a user fee. If the user fee is not paid, it will be added to the building tax.
