Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala High Court asked the Motor Vehicle Department not to issue fitness certificates to illegally-modified vehicles in the state. The bench of Justice Anil K Narendran pointed out that it is illegal to use multi-coloured LEDs, lasers, and neon lights in vehicles.

Apart from acting against such perpetrators under the MVD Act, the court also ordered officials to levy a Rs 5,000 fine for each illegal modification of a vehicle. The court also directed officials to ensure seized vehicles follow safety standards before releasing them. 

The court ruling came while considering a petition filed by the All Kerala Truck Owners Association alleging that MVD officials are not following a 2019 HC verdict directing the Police and MVD officials to ensure the successful implementation of road safety rules. 

Following the bus accident in Vadakkencherry on 5 October 2022, the High Court directed officials to take strict action against vehicle modifications. As a result, MVD has initiated measures to fine tourist buses and others for violating norms.
