Kochi: There has been a leap in the number of domestic tourists visiting the state. Within a period of six months ranging from January- June 2023, as many as 1.06 crore domestic tourists visited the various tourist destinations across the state. Comparatively, in 2022, the number was at 88.95 lakhs during the same time period which means that this year has witnessed an increase in the number of travellers by 20.1%.
In 2019, before the Covid pandemic, 88.64 tourist footfall was recorded. Minister of Tourism and Public Works, Mohamed Riyas said that this is indicative of Kerala surpassing the pre-covid domestic tourism footfall.
There has also been an increase in the number of international tourists with over 2.88 lakh tourists visiting the state, an increase of 171.55 percent over 2022.
In 2022, the tourism department recorded a revenue of Rs 35,168.42 crore while in 2021, this was Rs 12,285.42 crores.
As per tourism department records, between January and June, the most number of tourists visited Ernakulam district with 22.16 lakh people visiting the region. Idukki holds the second place with 18.01 lakhs while Thiruvananthapuram (17.21), Thrissur (11.67) and Wayanad (8.71) follow.
Tourism Director P.B Nooh said that Kerala can attract more tourists with innovative tourism products and promotional programmes.
