Malappuram: P Abdul Hameed, the Malappuram district general secretary of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), voiced sharp criticism on Monday regarding the ongoing stalemate in selecting Kerala’s next Chief Minister.

Highlighting a growing wave of public frustration, Hameed remarked that "people are expressing dissatisfaction everywhere we go, including at wedding ceremonies and funerals."

The IUML leader warned that the delay following the United Democratic Front's (UDF) landmark victory on May 4 has begun to demoralise both party cadres and the general electorate. According to Hameed, the hesitation by the Congress leadership could result in "political repercussions" if not resolved immediately.

"The decision has already been delayed. If it is prolonged further, there will be repercussions. We hope the AICC leadership realises this," he stated during a press briefing.

Hameed pointed out that the political landscape in Kerala is distinct from Northern India, asserting that the state's politically conscious voters would not tolerate such extended periods of indecision. He further noted that even female voters in the district have been questioning party leaders, asking why they were encouraged to vote for the UDF if the alliance cannot even decide on a leader.Due to the leadership vacuum, the UDF has been unable to celebrate its massive mandate effectively. "In many places, victory celebrations are not taking place. There are situations where elected MLAs are being advised not to attend public events because of the growing dissatisfaction," Hameed added.While the IUML has formally communicated its preference for a candidate to the Congress high command, the final call remains pending. The deadlock continues despite high-level meetings in New Delhi between Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and the three primary aspirants: V D Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala and K C Venugopal.
