Kasaragod: Another person has died from the fireworks accident at Veerarkavu temple. Rajith passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangalore, bringing the death toll to five.
Earlier victims
Two other victims also succumbed to their injuries on Sunday. Ratheesh, from Kinanoor, and Biju, a resident of Nileshwar, both passed away while under treatment. Another person, Sandeep from Choyamkode in Kinanoor, died on Saturday due to severe burns sustained as well.
The fire accident
The deadly accident occurred last Tuesday around 12:15 am during celebrations at the Veerarkavu temple. A large collection of firecrackers ignited when sparks from the few bursting firecrackers fell into a nearby storage area, causing a massive explosion. The firecrackers were stored in a makeshift building next to the temple wall, where many people, including women and children, had gathered to witness the festivities. Over 150 people were reported injured as a result of the explosion.
Legal developments
In the aftermath of the accident, legal action has been taken against those responsible. Initially, three individuals connected to the temple—a committee president, secretary, and the person who ignited the firecrackers—were granted bail by the Hosdurg First Class Judicial Magistrate. However, the District Court later revoked their bail following a review of the case.
