The CPM has decided to oppose from the outset the investigation announced by the Kerala Government against former chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family (over CMRL-Exalogic case).

The probe is being conducted based on a letter sent by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to the state police chief. CPM stand is that there is no need to wait until an FIR is registered to challenge an investigation it considers to be based on incorrect information.

The party has also decided against waiting to see whether the Kerala Police investigation proceeds in a proper manner. CPM workers took to the streets in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram during the initial stage itself.

The CPM plans to begin legal measures when notices are served on Pinarayi Vijayan or Mohammed Riyas.

Before that, the party will organise a campaign aimed at highlighting what it describes as the political objectives of the UDF government and its alleged association with the Sangh Parivar.

As part of the campaign, the CPM state committee is preparing a separate pamphlet. The party's mouthpiece published the contents on Tuesday as a precursor to the wider campaign, with the stated aim of explaining its position to the public.

CPM changes explanation over ‘red book’

Senior CPM leaders are also of the view that there was a problem with Mohammed Riyas' earlier explanation regarding the ‘red book (diary)’ mentioned in the ED's letter. Lawyers associated with the party had alerted its leaders about the issue.

Riyas had said that a ‘red book’ or diary mentioned in the ED letter did exist and that the entries made by Veena Vijayan in it related to future business. The lawyers reportedly pointed out that this could be seen as an admission of the ED's finding.

The party has subsequently altered its explanation to remove what it sees as that admission.

Its present position is that the claim that all the details were recorded in a non-existent ‘red book’ is also incorrect.
