Cherthala: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPM has assessed that a change in the functioning of the Students Federation of India (SFI) is necessary. This evaluation was made in light of discussions held during the party's state conference, where the organisational report and subsequent discussions highlighted the need for reforms. The CPM state committee has issued recommendations to district committees for improving SFI’s activities.
According to the party’s assessment, the lack of political education is a major reason for inefficiencies and misdirection in the organisation. The SFI’s approach has been described as disorganised and lacking structure. This critique was also voiced by the Chief Minister during his speech at the CPM Alappuzha district conference, where he addressed concerns about the functioning of the student organisation.

In response to continuous criticisms of the organisation, the CPM has stated that corrective measures are unavoidable to regain credibility. Currently, some members join SFI purely for self-preservation or survival within campus politics, and the aggressive competition between them often leads to internal conflicts. These issues, according to the assessment, are damaging both the organisation and the party.
The evaluation also points out that there has been no significant review or reform of the organisation's functioning. To address this, the party has instructed that every branch of the SFI in colleges should review their activities and implement necessary improvements.
In the past, the SFI conducted various camp-based and training programmes during holidays, in collaboration with the party. These activities proved successful in engaging students and fostering positive organisational methods. However, such initiatives have since disappeared. The party has now recommended the revival of similar activities, adapted to the current times, to strengthen the organisation and attract more students.
