Thiruvananthapuram: CPM state secretary MV Govindan on Saturday remarked about the rationale behind inviting Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) to tread together against Uniform Civil Code.

According to MV Govindan, the CPM will oppose UCC by cooperating with all like-minded entities except “Congress, which do not have a stand on matter and fundamentalists”.

“CPM has always supported the right stands of IUML and will continue to do the same,” he said. Govindan noted that times have changed and there is nothing like alienating IUML.

Commenting on the media person’s question about the chance of IUML’s joining LDF, Govindan said “It is their discretion to decide on the political stand. It will determine the allied matters,” he said.

He also responded to the query on the debate on UCC. “The possibility of debate can be with anybody including BJP,” he said. Govindan added that CPM’s possibility of having a debate can be with all parties in the country. “However, they all are topic specific, and the 'to or for' stand of the party will be determined by that,” he noted.

CPM earlier informed its stand on the implementation of the UCC which has been in the limelight due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remark on the matter. Govindan then said UCC is part of the Hindutva agenda, and the move aims at dismantling the diversity of the country. CPM opposes UCC and would organise “anti-CAA model" protests, Govindan informed. He noted that Samastha will be invited to the agitation. Interestingly, he then remarked that even IUML can be part of the agitation. It may be noted that IUML is in UDF. However, CPM has been hinting at its interest to welcome IUML to LDF.
