Thiruvananthapuram: The Ministers of CPI are unlikely to contest the assembly election this time. If they plan to implement the policy of not fielding those who won the election twice, then ministers E Chandrasekharan, K Raju, P Thilothaman and V S Sunil Kumar will not be able to contest. Also C Divakaran, Mullakkara Ratnakaran, G S Jayalal, E S Bijimol, E K Vijayan, Geetha Gopi, Chittayam Gopakumar and V Sasi also will be excluded from the electoral fray.

Though the policy on two terms is followed in general, it is not mandatory. The rule was not applied for C Divakaran, V S Sunil Kumar, Mullakkara Ratnakaran and Bijimol in the previous election. Sometimes, the rule is not followed considering chance of victory and seniority. As other ministers completed three terms as MLA, E Chandrasekharan, who completed only two terms, is likely to get one more chance.

The party faces several internal issues in Kollam, which is a stronghold. The secretary who was elected in the district conference had to resign from the post. Though the state leadership nominated a secretary, it was not realised due to strong protests. Currently, Mullakkara Ratnakaran is the secretary. Another leader P S Supal and MLA G S Jayalal faced disciplinary action. All this will reflect in the candidate selection.

CPI has comparatively low number of seats in Malabar area. As Kerala Congress also joined the LDF, the seats are likely to change. Irikkur constituency, where CPI contested last time, may be handed over to Kerala Congress. CPI is likely to be given Azhikode or Kannur seat. However, no decision is taken regarding the replacement for Kanjirappally seat, which will be given to Kerala Congress.

Youth leaders will be given top priority. AISF and AIYF leaders Shubhesh Sudhakar, Jismon, Mahesh Kakkath, P Prasad, Chinchurani, P Vasantham and others are under consideration. No official discussion has started. Candidate selection will be finalised after receiving list from district councils.
