Thiruvananthapuram: Even as investigations have been going on in connection with various allegations including amassing of disproportionate assets, Kerala government has decided to promote ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar to the rank of DGP. The decision was made in the cabinet meeting, based on the recommendation of the IPS screening committee.
The IPS screening committee, which met recently, has taken the position that no investigation currently underway against ADGP Ajith Kumar poses a barrier to his promotion. The screening committee comprises the Chief Secretary, the DGP and the Home Secretary.
It has been decided that, if ADGP Suresh Raj Purohit, currently on central deputation as the IG of SPG, would not return to the state by February, Ajith Kumar would be considered for promotion to the DGP rank. However, reports suggest that Suresh Raj Purohit is likely to return.
With the retirement of the current police chief, Shaik Darvesh Saheb, on July 1, Ajith Kumar is expected to be promoted to the rank of DGP. When DGP K. Padmakumar retires on April 3, ADGP (Law and Order) Manoj Abraham will initially take over as DGP. Ajith Kumar’s promotion will occur only after this transition.
Ajith Kumar is currently under investigation for various allegations, including his involvement in incidents related to the Thrissur Pooram festival and meetings with RSS leaders. There is also a vigilance inquiry into the allegations of acquiring disproportionate assets.
