Kochi: The Kerala High Court gave a nod to the Consumerfed to hold festive markets on the occasion of Ramzan and Vishu celebrations. However, the court also maintained that the government should not allocate subsidies for the same. It stated that the Consumerfed can organise the same using its own funds.
The High Court has also instructed the government not to make the markets a topic of discussion during the elections, observing that there are chances for the same when around 250 festive markets of the Consumerfed become subsidy markets of the government. So it directed the government to withhold the subsidies for these markets till the elections get over.
The Election Commission had earlier prevented the government from allocating subsidy funds to hold festive markets, following which the Consumerfed moved the High Court, which in turn directed to hold the markets without causing difficulties to both sides.
