Thiruvananthapuram: The Vizhinjam port protests turned violent on Saturday after clashes erupted between protesters and police officers over attempts to resume construction activities. Reportedly, clashes also took place between those supporting and opposing the project.

The police were unable to control the crowd gathered in the area. Many, including police officers, sustained injuries. More policemen have been deployed in the area.

The attempt to resume the construction activities began around 10.30 am. Following which, the protesters led by the Latin archdiocese blocked a truck carrying construction materials.

Soon after, those in support of the port construction demanded to release the truck and it led to conflict.

The attempts to resume construction works began after the high court said that protests could be carried out without halting construction works.
