Kozhikode: A clash broke out between CPM and Congress workers in Perambra, Kozhikode, on Friday, leading to injuries, including to UDF MP Shafi Parambil.

The violence erupted after police used lathicharge and tear gas to control a confrontation that occurred during protests related to college union elections at CKG College in Perambra.

According to reports, Shafi Parambil was injured on his face during the police action and has been admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode.

The incident was linked to celebrations by UDF's student wing, UDSF, after winning the chairman post in the college union elections. Police reportedly tried to stop the celebrations, which led to tensions and a clash in Perambra town the previous day, leaving several injured. In response, the UDF had called for a hartal in Perambra.

As part of the hartal, the UDF planned a protest march. Meanwhile, CPM also announced a protest, alleging that Perambra Panchayat President VK Pramod was attacked during the hartal.

As both protests converged, police intervened with lathi charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Stones were also reportedly thrown at police during the confrontation.

In protest against the police action and injuries to their leaders, UDF workers staged road blockades. Kozhikode Rural SP has also reached Perambra to assess and manage the situation.
