
Kochi: Chavara MLA N Vijayan Pillai passed away in the wee hours of Sunday at a private hospital here. He was 65. He has been under treatment for cancer for many days. The demise came by 3.30 am on Sunday.
Vijayan Pillai was a member of Chavara panchayat for 21 years from 1979 to 2000. He was elected as Kollam district panchayat member during 2000-2005 as Congress candidate. He was elected to Kerala assembly in 2016 defeating RSP leader Shibu Baby John. He won from Chavara as Left Independent candidate.
Vijayan Pillai entered politics through RSP, but later joined Congress in 2000. He was a close ally of Baby John in RSP and K Karunakaran after joining Congress. When Karunakaran left Congress, he became part of Democratic Indira Congress (DIC). Also he returned to Congress along with Karunakaran later.
He left Congress due to difference of opinion with former KPCC president K Sudheeran regarding liquor policy. Later, he joined CMP and supported Aravindakshan faction. As this faction merged with CPM, he also became part of CPM.
Vijayan Pillai is survived by wife Suma, sons Sujith and Sreejith and daughter Sreelakshmi.
