Thiruvananthapuram: Despite Arif Mohammed Khan’s contentious relationship with the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government, the Centre has decided to extend his tenure as Kerala Governor. 

The Centre believes that Khan's firm stance on several issues has helped uncover and prevent many controversial decisions of the state government. The Centre also acknowledges that Khan's actions have contributed to the BJP's growing influence in the state to some extent. 

Khan's vocal criticisms of the Chief Minister and government policies have often been seen as that of the BJP's viewpoint. His decision to withhold several crucial bills passed by the assembly, instead of forwarding them to the President, has sparked legal challenges. 

Khan's term as Governor, which began five years ago, is set to expire on September 6. According to norms, Governors can be replaced before their term ends on the advice of the Union Government. If not replaced immediately, they can continue until a successor is appointed. 

After it became clear that Khan will continue to hold office, the Raj Bhavan has scheduled hearings on grievances related to universities and complaints concerning the appointment of Vice-Chancellors.
