CCTV footage reveals Kunnamkulam police assaulting Youth Congress leader Sujith VS. Court orders action against four policemen involved.

Kunnamkulam(Thrissur): Footage has emerged showing police brutally assaulting Youth Congress Chowannur area president Sujith VS. The incident, which took place on April 5, 2023, surfaced two years later after Sujith launched a legal battle.
According to reports, Sujith was beaten by Kunnamkulam police after he intervened when officers allegedly misbehaved with his friends and used obscene language while standing by the roadside. Sujith was taken to the police station in a jeep, where he was allegedly assaulted by four policemen — SI Nuhman and CPOs Sasidharan, Sandeep and Sajeevan.
Sujith claimed he was first beaten in one room and then taken to another, where the assault continued. Following the incident, police registered a case against him, including charges of assaulting officers while drunk and obstructing them in the execution of their duty. Non-bailable sections were imposed, and an FIR was submitted in court.
However, the Chavakkad Magistrate’s Court found Sujith was not drunk, based on a medical examination, and granted him bail. A subsequent medical report ordered by the court confirmed that Sujith had suffered hearing loss due to the assault.
Sujith later lodged complaints with police officials and the Human Rights Commission, but no action was taken. He then approached the court, which directly registered a case.
Although Sujith requested CCTV footage from the station, police initially refused to provide it. The State Right to Information Commission later ordered its release after summoning both sides and hearing their arguments. The court has also directed that a case be filed against the four policemen involved.
