Palakkad, Kerala: Police are investigating the deaths of two men, Binu (45) and Nithin (25), whose bodies were found in Kalladikode here on Tuesday. However, the motive behind the suspected murder-suicide remains unclear.

Binu, a resident of Marutharode, was found with a gunshot wound to the chest, consistent with firing a firearm at close range. Police recovered the unlicensed weapon he reportedly used. Nithin’s body was found, with injuries indicating he was shot by Binu before the latter turned the gun on himself.

What police have revealed so far

The injury on Binu’s chest is consistent with a self-inflicted shot, with significant blood loss, said the police. Nithin’s right side shows gunshot injuries, suggesting he was shot by Binu. Signs indicate Nithin may also have tried to defend himself.

Police are probing whether a sudden provocation triggered the tragedy. Locals claimed that Binu frequently carried firearms into nearby forested areas, but it remains unclear whether he intended to go there or confront Nithin on the day of the incident. Over 15 cartridges were recovered from his belt.

Nithin’s mother, Shail, told police that Binu spoke harshly to her son the day before the incident. Neighbours also reported that the two men had a conversation around 2 pm on Tuesday, with Binu in possession of the firearm. Police are investigating whether this conversation escalated into disagreement and violence.

Nithin was found in the kitchen at the back of his house, left hand holding a kitchen spatula. Binu, wearing Bermuda shorts, reportedly left the house and shot himself on the road in front. The remote, largely deserted Marutharode forest area adds to the mystery, with few witnesses. Neighbours said they had not noticed any unusual hostility between the two, who were otherwise familiar acquaintances.

Police continue to investigate all angles, including the sequence of events leading to the shooting, but the exact reason for the confrontation remains unknown.
