Alappuzha: Cardinal Mar George Alencherry expressed his astonishment at the quick acceptance of his resignation as Major Archbishop of the Syro Malabar Church by the Vatican.
Speaking to a channel affiliated with the diocese, Cardinal Alencherry revealed that he had not anticipated his resignation to be accepted instantly. “I tendered my resignation by submitting two letters to the Vatican. When the resignation was unexpectedly approved, I was surprised by the swiftness of the decision."
Alencherry admitted that his presence as Major Archbishop could have obstructed the resolution of problems within the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese. He stated that his decision to resign was motivated by his desire to make way for the progress of the church.
“There were numerous allegations going around, and I opted to task the same individuals who brought up the land deal to investigate it. Though some criticised my decision, I believed that an investigation leading to the truth would bring me peace. Prayer became my refuge during this crisis.”
Emphasising the necessity of uniform mass, Cardinal Alencherry affirmed his commitment to uphold the decision of the Synod.
