Thiruvananthapuram: Cabinet has approved a project of Rs 1118 crore for converting the Conolly canal into a major waterway in Kozhikode. The project will be funded by KIIFB.

The canal will be developed in an eco-friendly manner with special emphasis on goods transport, tourism and flood control in the district. The width and depth of the canal will be modified to the waterway level.

Interceptor sewers and a treatment system will be installed to avoid contamination of the water. The canal banks also will be beautified and job opportunities will be created.

The project aims to develop Kozhikode into a city that can be called a canal city in the future.
