Kottayam: Mary Roy’s brother George Isaac arrived to attend her funeral ceremony in Kottayam. The people who reached Pallikkoodam to bid adieu to their beloved Mary, held back their tears while George Isaac uttered the last prayers for her.

Without any religious rituals, Mary’s funeral was held on the premises of Pallikkoodam. Her daughter Arundhati Roy lit the funeral pyre on the head side and her son Lalit Roy lit the pyre near the foot.

Mary Roy and George Isaac were not on good terms after the former filed a case against her brother for obtaining half of the property owned by their father. However, Mary Roy rang up George four years back and settled the issues to an extent. Mary had asserted that her legal battle was not personal, but it was against the system which places women in an inferior position to men.

Arundhati Roy received uncle George when he arrived at around 11 am with his wife Susi. “The world saw my uncle as a big enemy of my mother. A big enemy is also a great friend. Beyond the fight of varying ideologies, there was always a space for love between them,” said Arundhati Roy. By informing that her uncle would sing prayers for Mary, Arundhati handed over the mike to George.
