Sreekaryam (Thiruvananthapuram): The glass panels that had developed cracks at the soon-to-open glass bridge in the Akkulam Tourist Village have been replaced by the authorities. The repair works took place under the supervision of police authorities, forensic experts, and the engineers and technicians from the company responsible for building the bridge.

The inauguration of the glass bridge was earlier postponed following the floating bridge accident in Varkala on March 9. After cracks mysteriously appeared in the newly constructed structure in Akkulam, officials have been urged to implement stringent measures to ensure the quality and safety standards of the adventure tourism infrastructure in the state.

The technicians have collected broken glass samples from the bridge to examine how the cracks were formed. The cracks were found in the bottom of the three-layered glass on Wednesday afternoon.

The Vattiyoorkavu Youth Brigade Entrepreneurs Cooperative Society (VYBeCOS), which established and maintains the adventure park, filed a complaint with the Sreekaryam police based on footage circulating on social media. The complaint states that anti-social elements were behind the vandalism act.

The Sreekaryam police have registered a case and have started investigations. There were reports that an altercation had ensued between the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) employees and VYBeCOS workers a few days ago. It was following this that the cracks were noticed on the bridge. Outsiders do not have access to these parts. So, the police investigations will focus on the employees.
