A major fire erupted at the bike parking area of Thrissur Railway Station, with the cause and damage yet to be ascertained.

Thrissur: A massive fire broke out at the bike parking area of Thrissur Railway Station on Sunday. The fire spread in the parking area adjacent to Platform No: 2. More than a hundred bikes were gutted in the blaze. Fire and rescue services have reached the spot and are attempting to douse the fire. The cause of the fire has not yet been identified.
This is the area where the maximum number of vehicles are parked. More than 500 bikes are parked here on a daily basis. It is feared that all vehicles parked inside the parking shed may be completely destroyed. The fire broke out at around 6.45 am.

As all the vehicles contained fuel, firefighting efforts proved challenging. No injuries have been reported. The fire raged intensely inside the parking shed and even spread to a nearby tree. Train services may be affected due to the fire.
There are allegations that negligence on the part of the railway parking authorities led to the fire spreading on such a large scale. According to eyewitnesses, the fire initially started on a single bike in a minor way. They said that if a fire extinguisher had been available at the parking area at that time, the fire would not have grown to such proportions. Due to strong winds, the fire spread to other vehicles within minutes. Explosions were reported, making it impossible for people to approach the area. After considerable effort, additional fire engines arrived and the fire was brought under control.
