India Post to launch doorstep pickup via mobile app, ends acknowledgment cards, introduces digital POD, SMS alerts, and barcode tracking for ordinary letters

Uduma(Kasaragod): Customers can now book Registered Post, Speed Post, and Parcel services from the comfort of their homes using the India Post mobile app. Once the booking and payment are completed through the app, the postman will receive a notification and arrive at the customer’s location to collect the postal items.
This is part of a series of upcoming reforms in the Postal Department. Additionally, the department plans to replace the existing TCS software with a new in-house system developed by India Post.
The acknowledgement card (return receipt), which serves as proof that a registered item has been received by the addressee, will be discontinued under the new amendment. In its place, a Proof of Delivery (POD) service will be introduced, available for a fee of Rs 10.
The maximum amount that can be sent through a money order has been increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.
A new system is being introduced to ensure accurate delivery updates for both the sender and the recipient of postal items. Mobile numbers of both parties will now be used to send real-time delivery notifications.
In cases where delivery is unsuccessful due to reasons like a locked house or closed gate, postal staff will be required to upload a photograph of the recipient's residence as proof of the delivery attempt.
The traditional method of signing to acknowledge receipt of a letter will be replaced with a digital signature system.
If a letter is received by someone authorized by the addressee, a new system will soon be introduced to capture a photograph of that person as proof of delivery.
Additionally, a barcode-based tracking system for ordinary letters is in the works, allowing for better monitoring of their movement. Currently, India Post's website offers tracking services for Speed Post, Registered Post, Parcels, and Money Orders.
