Kozhikode: At least four people have been reported dead following a short circuit incident at Kozhikode Medical College on Friday night.

While speaking to the media, T Siddique MLA confirmed that Nazira (44), a native of Kalpetta Meppadi, Wayanad, had died.

"It is reported that she died while being shifted from the ventilator when smoke rose," he said.

T. Siddique also stated that he had spoken to the families of the deceased and that the bodies had been moved to the mortuary.

According to reports, the deaths were caused by suffocation due to the smoke.

Meanwhile, the Hospital Superintendent had confirmed that the situation was quickly brought under control and no injuries were initially reported.

Fire breaks out in emergency department

Panic broke out at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on Friday evening after thick smoke was seen rising from the emergency department.

The source was traced to the UPS room, with a suspected short circuit believed to have triggered the incident around 8 PM.

Over 200 patients were promptly evacuated from the emergency ward as a precaution, along with critical medical equipment.
