Palakkad: BJP will field Sandeep Varier against Shafi Parambil in Palakkad in the upcoming Assembly elections.
The saffron party is buoyed with their victory in the LSG polls. The BJP leadership believes that retaining Palakkad Municipality and increasing its vote share in the neighbouring panchayats will positively influence the Assembly election.
BJP has been eyeing Palakkad seat for more than 4 decades. Last time, Shobha Surendra finished second in the election. However, the party wants to go all out and win the constituency this time.
Meanwhile, Shafi Parambil, who won the constituency from LDF in 2011, had increased his vote share in the last election.
The BJP state leadership wants to field party state secretary and former municipality chairman, C Krishnakumar, in Palakkad. However, Krishnakumar wants to contest in Malampuzha. That is why the leadership is mulling to let Sandeep Varier contest in Palakkad.
BJP currently has a difference of 6,000 votes with UDF. The leadership believes that the party will be able to cross that mark with the arrival of a young leader like Sandeep Varier. BJP Palakkad district president, E Krishnadas stated that lotus will bloom in the district this time.
As far as UDF is concerned, Shafi Parambil will be their candidate in the district. LDF is not expected to experiment with senior leaders in Palakkad district.
