Mankombu (Alappuzha): Soon after bird flu was confirmed in Kozhikode, around 4000 ducks died in Thalavadi and Mankombu areas in Kuttanadu leaving farmers in distress. 3000 ducks owned by Bijumon in Mankombu and 800 ducks of K V Varghese in Thalavadi died.

The farmers said that the birds showed symptoms similar to bird flu that occurred in 2014. However, the Department of Animal Husbandry is of the opinion that the ducks were not affected with bird flu, but Riemerella disease which spreads through water. More ducks in the region show similar symptoms.

Chief veterinary officer Dr Unnikrishnan said that samples from the affected area have been sent to a lab at Manjadi in Thiruvalla. The report will be available by Wednesday evening. More details regarding the disease can be given only after this, he added.

Riemerella disease

Riemerella bacteria mostly affects young ducks and it may cause even death. As the ducks live in flocks, the disease spreads easily. Antibiotics are effective and vaccines are available for disease control. Ensuring hygiene can prevent the disease.
