Kozhikode: The implementation of AI cameras in the district has revealed a concerning trend of individuals traveling in four-wheelers without wearing seat belts. Motor Vehicle Department officials emphasize the need to dispel the misconception that only drivers are required to wear seat belts, emphasizing that all passengers in the vehicle must buckle up. A child restraint system equipped seat should also be prepared for children.

On the first day of AI camera operations, a staggering total of 248 violations were captured on camera, with 144 instances involving co-passengers neglecting to wear seat belts. The following day, out of 517 violations recorded, 211 were related to co-passengers not using seat belts. However, the number of such violations dropped to 118 by Thursday. A penalty of Rs 500 is imposed for failure to wear a seat belt.

The district's highest number of seat belt violations was found in Koduvalli, closely followed by Kattangal, Nadapuram, and Mukkam. Most of the reported violations occurred outside the city.

Other violations include riding motorcycles without helmets, carrying more than two individuals on a two-wheeler, and using mobile phones while driving. The data from 68 cameras installed across the district, indicates a significant reduction in mobile phone usage while driving.
