Thiruvananthapuram: Several VIPs, including Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), have been caught violating traffic rules by artificial intelligence (AI) cameras installed to detect traffic violations in Kerala. The Motor Vehicle Department has issued challans to all of them.
A review meeting of the AI cameras was held today in Thiruvananthapuram under the chairmanship of transport minister Antony Raju. Within a month, the cameras captured violations by 19 MLAs and ten MPs.

The names of the MPs and MLAs caught on camera have not been disclosed. Speeding and failure to wear seat belts were among the common violations detected against these public representatives.
As of Wednesday, the AI cameras have recorded a total of 32,42,277 violations. Out of these, 15,83,367 cases have been examined, and e-challans have been issued to 3,82,580 individuals. The government has sent challans to 3,23,604 people for violating traffic laws. Additionally, 328 government vehicles were also found to have violated traffic rules.
The introduction of AI cameras has significantly reduced the number of traffic violations and improved compliance with traffic laws, as per the government's observation.
A total fine of around Rs 25 crore has been imposed, but only Rs 3.3 crore has been collected. To address late payment issues, the government is planning to introduce an alternative system. If fines are not paid on time, the government may restrict the renewal of insurance for the next year as a measure to enforce compliance.
