Kochi: The Ernakulam Motor Accident Claims Tribunal granted a compensation of Rs 85 lakh to a young man who sustained life-altering injuries below the waist in a bike accident. Such substantial compensation amounts are rarely awarded for injuries, typically limited to cases of accidental deaths.
The incident occurred in August 2020 when Christy (21), a resident of Palluruthi, was involved in a severe accident while travelling as a pillion passenger on a bike. The bike lost control and collided with another car, causing grave injuries below the waist. Recognizing the gravity of the injuries, the court ordered Tata AIG, the general insurance company, to pay Rs 85 lakh, inclusive of the interest.
Furthermore, the advocate involved in the case highlighted that many individuals are unaware that pillion riders can also avail insurance coverage. In this particular instance, the bike possessed comprehensive insurance coverage (bumper-to-bumper), ensuring that the victim received the deserved compensation.
