Former English batsman Kevin Pietersen openly criticized the bowling performance of England against Australia on the opening day of the second test of the Ashes at Lord's Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

On the first day, Australia dominated with the bat and managed to put up a score of 339/5, with Smith (85*) and Alex Carey (11*) unbeaten at the crease. Speaking to Sky Sports during the Tea break, Pietersen termed England's performance "shambolic" and "absolutely not good enough."

Despite playing under favourable overcast conditions, host skipper Ben Stokes's decision to send Australia to bat first backfired for England. David Warner and Usman Khawaja's 73-run opening partnership gave a solid start for Australia. The Aussies lost five wickets on the opening day and retired with 339 runs at the end of the play, more than they bargained for in front of packed home fans.

Apart from Josh Tongue and Joe Root  --both with two wickets each-- English pacers displayed a dismal performance on the opening day.

“Not a lot has caught my eye from an English perspective. It has been shambolic. Absolutely Shambolic. You have overhead conditions, you have a wicket that suits your bowlers, you have bowlers running in at 78, 79 miles an hour," he said on Sky Sports. He added that the England coaches will be criticizing them inside the dressing room while Australia batters are waiting for their opponents.

"This is not Ashes Cricket. I have played 30 test matches against Australia. It’s not good enough. You cannot bowl that here today, you cannot have these conditions, and you cannot declare for 390. Do you think Australia is declaring today? Do you think Australia is getting 390 and saying England to bat? No chance," he added.

"Are you telling me, Ricky Ponting, in 2005 is going to be talking to Geraint Jones? You think Michael Vaughan is going to be standing next to Justin Langer and saying, hey man, what a cool day, what an awesome day and environment here at Lord's?"

"Are you joking? Are you absolutely joking? I just hope they're in their dressing room now and the England coach [Brendon McCullum] is giving them the biggest hammering and saying it's not good enough. It's absolutely not good enough," Pietersen signed off.
