Malappuram: A complaint has been filed in Vengara alleging that a man divorced his wife over the phone by pronouncing triple talaq. The young woman, who was married two years ago, was reportedly informed by her husband, Veerankutty from Kondotty, that their relationship was over through a phone call.
It is also alleged that 30 sovereigns of gold ornaments given by the woman’s family were not returned. The ornaments were reportedly kept by Veerankutty’s mother.
An audio clip has surfaced in which Veerankutty is heard speaking to the woman’s father, informing him that he had pronounced triple talaq to his daughter. In the audio, Veerankutty is also heard saying that he is willing to sign any necessary documents.
The woman claims that her husband and his relatives forcibly took the gold ornaments, and that the mahr was taken from her while she was in the hospital.
In Islamic law, mahr is a payment—usually in the form of money or property—that a husband gives to his wife as part of the marriage contract. It is a religious obligation and becomes the personal property of the wife.
Veerankutty had informed the woman’s father two months ago that he intended to pronounce triple talaq. The woman reportedly stayed at her husband’s house for only 40 days. After that, she returned to her parental home. During that time, she was pregnant. However, she said her husband never inquired about her or the pregnancy.
