Thiruvananthapuram: Police have seized around 300 kilograms of cannabis from a luxury car on the Karamana–Kaliyakkavila route near Pappanamcode. The operation was carried out by the city police’s DANSAF unit on Monday evening.
The car had been parked by the roadside and was under police surveillance since Sunday. Officers found the cannabis hidden in plastic-wrapped packets in the rear of the vehicle, amounting to more than 50 individual packages.
Police took action when an individual arrived to collect the car, taking both the driver, identified as 23-year-old Afsal from Karakulam, and a friend he had called, into custody.
Preliminary investigations suggest the cannabis was transported from Hyderabad. Authorities suspect that the car may have been rented for the purpose. Locals, alerted to the presence of the vehicle, had gathered at the scene, prompting additional police deployment.
The seized packages were laid out by the roadside and measured and sealed under a controlled setup later in the evening.
City Police Commissioner K Karthik personally visited the site. Further details are expected once the detained individuals are thoroughly questioned. The suspects will be handed over to the Nemom police for continued investigation.
