Kondotty: A 19-year-old woman, Shahana Mumthas, was found dead inside her home in Malappuram. Shahana, a student at Kondotty Government College, was found hanging inside her house. Relatives allege she faced mental abuse from her husband, Abdul Wahid, and his family due to her skin colour.

Shahana was the daughter of Parashiri Basheer and Shameena, who lived on Kondotty Block Road. According to reports, the family broke open the door around 10 am on Tuesday when they could not get a response.

Her relatives claim that her husband and in-laws constantly mocked her for her skin colour, poor English skills, and communication difficulties, which led to emotional distress. They also claim that her in-laws even pressured her to divorce. Despite excelling academically, Shahana’s performance declined, and she became increasingly depressed. When her college reached out to her family, they revealed she had been suffering from mental abuse at home.

The post-mortem report suggested that Shahana had attempted suicide a few days back by cutting her wrist.

Shahana married Abdul Wahid on May 27 last year. After their marriage, Wahid went abroad but allegedly continued to torment her mentally through phone calls. Shahana's parents and relatives filed a police complaint, alleging she was subjected to mental harassment due to her skin colour.

Following the incident, the Kondotty police have registered a case of unnatural death and opened up an investigation.

Shahana’s burial took place on Wednesday morning after her father, who had been working abroad arrived.
