Thiruvananthapuram: The food safety department on Saturday conducted surprise raids at eateries selling Shawarma in the state. Following this, 148 outlets were restricted from selling Shawarma for violating food safety guidelines regarding its preparation.  

Kerala Health Minister Veena George informed that the food safety officials conducted the inspections to ensure that the Shawarma was prepared by following the health department's guidelines. She added that 88 squads conducted inspections at 1287 centres in the state.

Meanwhile, rectification notices were issued to 178 outlets and compounding notices to 308 eateries. The department took action against 146 outlets that failed to meet mayonnaise preparation standards. 

The Health Minister stated that inspections will continue and strict action will be taken against those who flout norms.

The state government issued rules for the sale of shawarmas, including the requirement of a licence, in September 2022, following the the death of a youngster in Kasargod due to food poisoning.
