Rani Kapur, mother of late Sunjay Kapur, disputes cardiac arrest as cause of death, alleges coercion, and demands AGM deferment

New Delhi: In a startling turn of events, Rani Kapur — mother of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur — has raised serious doubts over the official account of her son’s sudden death. Sunjay, the ex-husband of actor Karisma Kapoor and chairman of Sona Comstar, reportedly died of a cardiac arrest while playing polo in the UK on June 12. He was 53. But now, a month later, his grieving mother says the explanation doesn’t add up.
“For my client, as a mother, it's deeply painful to watch this being dismissed as a mere freak accident and cardiac arrest. The truth doesn't match the headlines,” said her legal representative, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, in a statement to ANI. “She will not stay silent until the truth is acknowledged.”
Allegations of Coercion and Corporate Moves
In her statement, Rani Kapur also alleged that she was forced to sign documents under duress shortly after Sunjay’s passing. She has demanded the immediate deferment of Sona Group’s Annual General Meeting, which was scheduled for today, and voiced strong opposition to any new appointments of directors at this time.
Gaggar clarified that while no formal legal action has been initiated yet, all legal options remain open.
A Quiet Farewell, a Loud Aftermath:
Sunjay Kapur’s last rites were held on June 19 at the Lodhi Road Crematorium in Delhi, attended by close friends and family. His sudden death sent shockwaves across business and celebrity circles alike.
Sunjay, once married to Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor, had two children with her before their highly publicised divorce in 2016. He later married Priya Sachdev, and the couple has a son, Azarias.
As mystery now clouds what was initially reported as a tragic but natural death, all eyes are on the Kapur family — and the unanswered questions surrounding the billionaire’s final moments.
