Parbhani, Maharashtra : In a tragic incident, a 19-year-old woman gave birth on a moving sleeper coach bus and, along with a man claiming to be her husband, allegedly threw the newborn out of the window, resulting in the baby's death.

The horrifying act took place around 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday on the Pathri-Selu Road. The matter came to light after an alert passerby noticed something wrapped in cloth being tossed from the bus and found it was a baby boy. He immediately contacted the police via the 112 helpline.

Police identified the woman as Ritika Dhere, who was travelling from Pune to Parbhani on a Sant Prayag Travels sleeper bus, accompanied by Altaf Shaikh. The couple, both originally from Parbhani and residing in Pune for the past 18 months, claimed to be married but could not provide documents to prove their relationship.

According to officials, Dhere went into labour during the journey and delivered the baby in the bus compartment. The couple then allegedly wrapped the infant in a cloth and threw him out of the window. The bus driver initially believed the passenger had vomited, based on what Shaikh told him.

Soon after, police on patrol intercepted the bus and took the pair into custody. The woman was rushed to a hospital for medical care.

The couple reportedly told police they discarded the baby because they were unable to raise the child. The infant died after impact with the road.

A case has been registered under Section 94 (3), (5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — related to concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body — at the Pathri police station. Authorities have served notices to the accused and an investigation is ongoing.
