Kolkata: At least 25 people, including women and children, fell ill following a suspected ammonia gas leak from an ice factory in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred around 9.30 p.m. on Sunday at Shapukur area in Basirhat, triggering panic amongst residents as the chemical gas spread into adjoining areas, according to authorities.

"Those affected complained of breathing difficulties and other health issues, and are undergoing treatment at Haroa Rural Hospital," a senior police officer stated.

"The situation is being closely monitored and the cause of the leak investigated," he added.

A fire engine was deployed to the site on Sunday to contain the leak and bring the situation under control, the officer noted.

In protest against the incident, aggrieved residents briefly blocked the Berachampa-Haroa Road. The blockade was subsequently lifted following discussions with district administration officials.
