Despite his celebrity status and vast wealth, Vijay’s salary as Chief Minister will be treated like that of any government employee

A new chapter has opened in Tamil Nadu politics as actor-turned-politician Vijay assumed office as Chief Minister under the Dravidian political platform, triggering celebrations across the state.
Alongside the political excitement, public attention has now shifted to a different question — how much will Vijay earn as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu?
Vijay’s Salary as Chief Minister
According to current government pay structures, Vijay is expected to receive a monthly salary package of between Rs 2.85 lakh and Rs 3 lakh.
The amount includes:
Basic salary: Rs 1.05 lakh
Constituency allowance: Rs 87,000
Office allowance: Rs 75,000
Overall, Vijay’s annual earnings from the Chief Minister’s post are estimated at around Rs 34 lakh.
What Do Ministers and MLAs Earn?
Tamil Nadu ministers receive salaries slightly lower than the Chief Minister, with monthly earnings estimated at around Rs 2.5 lakh.
MLAs, meanwhile, receive between Rs 1.05 lakh and Rs 1.15 lakh per month through a combination of salary and allowances, including constituency expenses, telephone reimbursements and medical benefits.
How Will Vijay Be Taxed?
Despite his celebrity status and vast wealth, Vijay’s salary as Chief Minister will be treated like that of any government employee.
Under Income Tax rules, a Chief Minister is legally considered a government employee because an employer-employee relationship exists between the state and the office-holder. As a result, the Chief Minister’s earnings are taxed under the “Salary” category and are subject to normal income tax slabs and standard deductions.
MLAs and MPs, however, are treated differently. Since they are classified as elected public representatives rather than government employees, their earnings fall under “Income from Other Sources”. This allows them to claim deductions linked to office expenditure, staff costs and related expenses.
Vijay’s Declared Wealth
According to his election affidavit, Vijay has declared assets worth around Rs 624 crore.
The actor, who reportedly charged around Rs 200 crore per film at the height of his cinema career, will now need to separately account for his personal income from films and businesses alongside his government salary while filing Income Tax Returns.
Official Perks and Facilities
In addition to salary, Vijay will receive several official benefits as Chief Minister.
These include:
- A fully furnished government residence in Chennai
- Z+ category security cover
- Armed police protection and escort vehicles
- A bulletproof SUV for official travel
- Access to aircraft and helicopter services for government duties
- Comprehensive medical coverage for himself and family members
All official travel and security expenses will be borne by the Tamil Nadu government.
