Washington DC: In a closely watched vote, the US Senate confirmed Jay Bhattacharya as the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Tuesday, with a 53-47 majority during the first session of the 119th Congress. Bhattacharya, a professor of health policy at Stanford University, has a distinguished career in medical research and policy, making him a key figure in shaping the future of US biomedical research.

His appointment follows a nomination from former US President Donald Trump, highlighting Bhattacharya’s extensive contributions to health policy, economics, and biomedical innovation. In addition to his role at Stanford, he is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a senior fellow at multiple institutions, including the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and the Hoover Institution. He also directs Stanford’s Centre for Demography and Economics of Health and Ageing, with his research covering government healthcare programs, public health policy, and medical innovation.

Bhattacharya gained national recognition as a co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration in October 2020, which advocated for alternatives to COVID-19 lockdowns. His work spans a wide range of disciplines, with publications in economics, statistics, law, medicine, and health policy journals.

Following his confirmation, US Republican Senator Mitch McConnell congratulated Bhattacharya, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the NIH. “With an extensive background in medical research, I expect Dr. Jay Bhattacharya to provide sound leadership at the NIH,” McConnell wrote on X.

Bhattacharya will work alongside newly appointed US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was confirmed in February. The two are expected to focus on restoring the NIH’s reputation as the "Gold Standard of Medical Research," according to a statement from the administration.

His appointment signals a shift in the leadership of the NIH, with expectations of policy reforms and a renewed emphasis on independent medical research. As he takes on this pivotal role, Bhattacharya’s expertise and vision will shape the future of American healthcare and scientific innovation.
