Bengaluru: In a concerning incident, the gate of the Tungabhadra Dam in Karnataka's Koppal district broke on Saturday night. The chain of the 19th shutter snapped, leading to the release of a significant amount of water from the dam.
Officials reported that approximately one lakh cusecs of water have already been released. To ensure the safety of the dam, all 33 gates have been opened. As a result, a high alert has been issued in the districts of Koppal, Vijayanagara, Bellary, and Raichur.
This is the first time in 70 years that such an accident has occurred at the Tungabhadra Dam. According to reports from the Deccan Herald, officials have indicated that repairs to the broken shutter will only be possible after 60,000 million cubic feet of water have been released.
