Tamil Nadu: Six people were killed and over 50 others injured after two private buses collided head-on near Idaikal village in Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi district on Monday, prompting a major rescue operation by emergency services.

The injured have been taken to hospital with serious wounds, including fractures to their arms, legs and head.

Atleast 55 people were travelling in the two buses when the accident occurred.

Police said the crash occurred when a bus travelling from Madurai to Senkottai collided with another heading from Tenkasi towards Kovilpatti. The force of the impact left both vehicles severely damaged, with firefighters and local authorities working for hours to pull passengers from the wreckage.

According to the police, preliminary findings indicate the Keysar bus travelling from Madurai towards Senkottai was being driven recklessly. Investigators believe speeding and negligent driving by its driver led to the collision.

All injured passengers have been admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Health officials reported that several victims remain in a critical condition and warned that the death toll could rise.

Police have launched a full investigation into the incident and are reviewing CCTV footage and eyewitness testimonies to determine the exact sequence of events.
