Kolkata: The string of technical setbacks confronting Air India showed no signs of abating, as yet another long-haul flight — this time from San Francisco to Mumbai — was disrupted due to an engine issue. The aircraft was forced to halt longer than scheduled at Kolkata airport in the early hours of Tuesday, leading to all passengers being deplaned.

Flight AI180 had landed on time at 12.45 am. However, a fault detected in the left engine delayed its onward journey. Around 5.20 am, the crew announced that all passengers would need to disembark.

“The decision was made in interest of flight safety,” the captain told passengers.

Air India officials said they were working to assist travellers and arrange alternate plans. The incident adds to growing concerns over recurring technical troubles in the airline’s international fleet.
